Sep 6, 2016 · 1997 chevy tahoe 4wd What I thought was my starter went bad a few months back and has gotten worse, just recently for the last few weeks have only been able to start it with the screwdriver method on the solenoid. When I turn the key in the truck I get no cranking, no noises, headlights don't seem to dim, nothing! 99 Yukon 5.7 Drove normally. 15k on a new GM engine. Ran awesome. Parked for a while. Started up and filled the tank... came back a week later to start it again, just to run it as its not currently a daily driver... DEAD battery, which is brand new... took it out and charged it up. Slapped...The starter may not be grounded very well. Run a jumper cable from the negative terminal and clamp the body of your starter to check this. If the starter works fine with this set-up, then remove the starter, clean the corrosion around it and where it mounts, and reinstall it. Aug 25, 2013.
