In this sense it is synonymous with the concept of an ancient settlement —whether a hamlet, village, town, or city. The term "community" is used in several ways, but a common definition is the concept of belongingness (Solomon, Watson, Battistitch, Schaps, & Delucci, 1996). Further, Furman (1998) states that a community is not established until its members feel a sense of belonging, community members trust each other, and feel safe (Osterman, 2000).
