I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the cats passives to make any weapons more preferable. Dog - explosives and big guns, the other cat - "sniper" class weapons, bird - shotguns (but only "technically" really because they are close range weapons). Melee doesn't have the fire rate to make the 12 hits needed. Its good for early in a run, but falls off very quickly. I would say that Melee doesn't really synergize the best with Tao.
